Tree of Remembrance
Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester
Artists: Wolfgang and Heron
The 11 metre high sculptural tree is set within a scheme by the renowned Japanese architect, Tadao Ando.
It commemorates those Manchester Civilians who died during World War II. Their names are etched into the bronze bands circling the trunk.
A canopy of bronze and stainless steel provides a sense of shelter and a place for quiet contemplation or for memorial events. Feelings of austerity and sensitivity are intertwined. Themes of memory, hope and regeneration are suggested.
Its monumental presence and organic flow respond to the public mood of the space and counterpoint the formal geometry of Ando’s memorial wall.
